If you’ve ever wondered why the 101 Dalmatians villain Cruella de Vil become so evil, the upcoming film Cruella will shed some light on her dastardly origins. Serving as a prequel to the 101 Dalmatians story, the live-action film will be released in less than two years. Disney, however, is already building excitement by sharing the first look of actor Emma Stone as the title character.

In a scene from the movie, Stone rocks de Vil’s iconic two-toned hair and bright red lips as she grasps the leashes of three Dalmatians. But these characteristics are where the similarities end between Stone and the original de Vil seen in the 1961 animated film. Stone’s version sports a curlier version of the black-and-white coif (instead of a straight bob) and wears a cropped leather jacket (rather than a fur coat).
There’s a good reason for this stylistic departure from the classic de Vil. At the recent D23 Expo, Stone revealed that the movie is set in 1970s London during the punk-rock era. She portrays de Vil as a “young, punkish” woman who eventually becomes fixated on stealing puppies to make fur coats.
The official release date for Cruella is May 28, 2021.
